The question was raised on another thread if going to a motion sim would help a persons rise in the virtual racing league. I think this is a good question. As a example my son who has only recently started driving was quicker than me on a static sim (all visual) (Note I never really liked driving a static sim), but I am quicker on a motion sim due to years of driving experience and being use to reading the movement of a car not just visuals. What has everyone else found, does the motion get in the way of a quick virtual time?

I think motion adds another layer of immersion to simracing. Makes it more enjoyable, definitely. But whether it makes you faster depends if you could use the added feeling to shave lap times. Some might say it is a distraction, some might say it helps with brake/accelerator work. I made my decision to build a motion rig while I was driving my car. I imagined driving without feeling instantaneous g-forces and just relying on the visual speed. Like what was said by @SeatTime , years of real world driving experience do play a role in determining a motion rig's usefulness...

But in the end, its all about getting used to what you have in disposal, right? :D I read some posts about this before from experts, i'll try to find them again

thats a curly one. I am not sure from this end if its made me faster or slower, but for sure it adds to the immersion. I know I have found I feel bumps I didnt before even through the FFb wheel.
The last game I played before going to motion was GRID and I think I got a bit faster. Thats before and after motion, I played GRID twice static and 1.5 times after that with motion.
I know from a friend I built a motion sim for, he now claims faster times because he feels the track better and can anticipate bumps and traction loss , even on a 2DOF frame.

I agree with Dave, it really adds to the immersion but I am in doubt as to its benefit to improving ones lap times. I have been very involved with iRacing lately and do find that if I turn off the motion I get more consistent lap times if not faster ones. The motion does give ques to the body as to what is going on but with a game (sim) most of it is twitch memory anyway and so motion, in my opinion, doesn't matter.

Having said that; I still prefer motion for the immersion factor.

    I found this video from SafeisFast.com, http://safeisfast.com/sections/7-dr...40-getting-the-most-out-of-sim-1#.U5X5HKNOUqQ

Definitely a must-see for the simracer. Regarding what they said about motion rigs, "get the hardware tuned to what you need as a driver." I guess what that means for us is to be extract all the performance we can get from the tools we have. Whether it is motion rig or not, being able to use everything we feel, what we sense, and translating it into faster lap times.

To start off with it's actually a lot harder to drive with motion , but once you train your brain to react to the feel and not the graphics (drive by the seat of your pants) you become a lot quicker, one thing I have noticed in driving IRacing.

    Interesting topic.
Iam still waiting for my motion rig.
But coming to think of it , find it intereseting what the results would be.
For now I think that the downside is, you need to work a bit more while driving instead of no motion
But the good thing would be that you could "feel" more of the grip laying around.

So with all that , I think it`s time to really to put it to the test.
I do most of the time Iracing, mostly in the Skip Barber.
There are a couple of circuits that I have driven a lot of laps , so bit more easy to find out.

Now I was thinking, pick Okayama (is this week)
Do several test sessions , with same wheater and settings , I can drive within a couple of thousands.
Record the test sessions with telemetry logger, now I can see what my optimal/perfect lap could be.
With that and couple of test sessions , pick a number of fastest laps over a session. devide and take average fastest lap.

Then when motion simulator arrive`s, take benchmark track (Okayama)
Tune gently motion to my most comfort.
Go out on track, drive several sessions.
And then just like a setup for a car, make a setup for the motion

Is it maybe smarter to make motion setup not only for the Car, but also the track combination?
Like some tracks have more elevation then others, are more flowly , have insane cerbs etc.

Well you see, can`t wait to trie it all out :)

In the current version of SimTools you can create a generic motion profile and then have Game Manager profile variations of it for particular cars/tracks, see here regarding motion profile refinement: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/steps-to-create-a-motion-profile.228/

    Thanks for the information Noorbeast.
Really awesome forum (reading helps the waiting part of it)
Got already Simtools running and tested it to get a better understanding of it.
Still a lot to learn about it :)

Edit: Did a couple of Time trials on Okayama with Skip barber
I ended up with 6 tries, best of the time`s was 1:42.757
Putting together the rig at the moment

Well this is one that I Dindt expected.
First trie with the motion sim I noticed already I could "feel" better the grip in certain corners
Thankfully I got 2 transducers in my couch , so learned already less is more.

Once tuned in (I had to adjust manually certain numbers to get it right)
Funny fact, when I did got wrong motion settings my time`s did get up.
So tried then for the fun a time trial , 1:42.612 , was my fastest time (average 1:43.0)
And that was not finding new line`s or something just could get earlier on throttle / feeling of grip

Really thought I would lose my pace by seconds or more due to motion.
But once properly tuned, it feels like you get more input/ knowing what a car does.
Also different cars feels so like different instead of faster/other ffb.

Really happy with it , and yes think motion can make you faster!
Still amazed, thinking it would be the opposite.

If anything it makes you more alert to crashes.
Without motion i couldn't care less when i crashed.
But now you actually feel it and my motion rig actually freaks out putting loads of strain on the parts..
So yeah avoiding crashes is now a matter of maintaining longevity of my rig! Kind of like a real car i guess :D

With 2dof and 4 bass shakers, I'm safer and more consistent, and eventually faster, in addition to immersion.
