After being into sim racing for 18 months now, and having a reasonable set up, I’m about to start building my first motion rig.

I want to build a 3DOF, but there seems to be way more 2DOF or 5-6DOF builds on here..... and not many 3’s.
This makes me wonder if it’s worth the effort, and seeing as a know absolutely nothing about building these, or software, or wiring, I should probably stick to something easy to begin.

    This is my current sim.

    GT Extreme Cockpit
    Keyboard mount
    Triples mount
    Shifter mount

    3x 144hz BenQ 27” screens
    Oculus Rift

    Fanatec 2.5 base
Fanatec universal hub with drift wheel
    Fanatec F1 wheel
    Fanatec BMW wheel
    Fanatec shifter
    Fanatec handbrake
    Fanatec v3 pedals

    Button box
    Surround sound
    Headphones

Mainly use iRacing, but also get on PC2 and AC if I’m bored.

I’ve decided to go with a full platform 2DOF set up because I’m handy with a welder and can use CAD.

Here is a rough plan of attack.

Just going to grab a seat and uni tomorrow so I can work out what size I need to make parts.

    My base will be 1800x1000

My movable platform will be 1600x800.

I started drawing my base tonight in CAD.

The crossmember will obviously move once I know where the balance point of the platform is.

I am thinking of using worm drive motors.

    200w, 20nm, 60:1

I’m 100kg, but want to handle 140kg driver.
I’d really like 25:1 for the extra speed, but not sure how they would handle the player weight.

    5EA2D237-C10F-4BFE-A52A-C92D2216771E.jpeg

Then these to run the motors.

I was planning to set the motor below the platform as per my scribble drawing, then have it attach to a bracket around 400mm above the platform...... and the motors will have around 800mm between them.

Does this sound like a good option? I’m open to ideas.

I want the highest reaction speeds possible with a 140kg player.

    Thanks mate.

I’ve decided to add traction loss now, just went and picked up all the parts.

Question with the rear castor wheels, should they be fixed and positioned slightly out of square of each other, or should they be the swivel type?

I have swivels, but now I’m not sure, and thinking I should have went fixed.

People have used a variety of wheels for TL, from those on roller blade skates to industrial wheels. They don't need to pivot, just be aligned to the arc they each travel through.

So seeing as I’m going traction loss now, I’ve build a base platform out of 15mm ply, and 70x35 structural timber, with 400mm spacings.

    D13B5A19-C72C-44A0-BC21-C26CDF59E685.jpeg

It’s overall size is 2000x1200 and I’ll cover it in carpet. I’ll then inlay a steel run for the traction loss wheels to run over.

I got some fixed casters with bearings, as well as a lazy Susan mount.
The lazy Suzan mount looks flimsy, so I don’t have a lot of faith in it.
If (when) it fails, I’ll chop down a beefy castor wheel, and weld a mounting plate to where the wheel once was.

I’m off to grab a uni joint now, and have a look at some seats.

Tomorrow I’ll weld up a frame to house the next platform,

Traction Loss platform drawn, and ready to cut tomorrow.
Then it’ll be covered in ply, and wrapped in carpet.
    90EDCD72-2781-495B-B9E5-A5C5F489D0AB.jpeg

Lazy Susan sandwiched up the front to allow rotation, 2x 100kg castors at the rear sliding on a bit of 3mm steel, which is mounted to the marine carpet covered timber base pictured above.

I have my uni joint now, so now I need to chop it down and weld 2 mounting plates to either end.

1 end gets mounted to the platform that the seat is on, the other end gets mounted to the 2 crossmembers on the grey traction loss frame.

Just not sure how/where to mount the traction loss motor yet, or the connecting rod.
I’ll most likely mount the connecting rod to the plate the castors are mounted to....... not sure on motor yet.

If anyone sees me heading down a wrong track, please holla!

I’ve thrown out the 2 castors I had, and replaced with 4 with bearings, 2 will be on the side, 2 under each edge of the seat.

My seat turned up today, so now I can start drawing again and get together a cut list over the next few days.

    Slight design change.

Went from the 2 swivel wheels, to 4 fixed (on arc)

Also changed out the lazy Suzan mount, for a proper face mounted bearing unit.

As you can see on the traction less platform, I've made a large plate for the motors to mount to once I have them.

My traction loss frame is 43kg, and the seat one is 29kg with the Recaro mounted.... Without any controls.

The crossmember position under the seat, and on the traction loss platform are subject to change once I find the balance point. Obviously this is to mount the Uni joint.

I just downloaded the simcalc and had a play.

I tried looking around the forum, but couldn't see a recommended goal for pitch and roll travel... Do you have and idea what I should be aiming for?

Haven’t touched this since my last reply, but had some spare time today.

Built and fitted the traction loss platform.

3x 100mm ballbearing rollers, and a big pivot bearing up front.

I’ll start working on the third platform and mounting the seat this week.

Just not sure where I’m mounting the 3 motors yet. Struggling to think of how to mount the traction loss platform to allow enough side to side travel....... I’ll browse some build threads.

Ive sadly all but abandoned this project :(

I don’t understand anything really when it comes to electronics, and I just cant get my head around it all.

Ill probably bin the stuff Ive build so far and just build a solid non-motion rig.

That is sad to read. If you decided to continue, a model would be a cheap way to let you play with the electronics to see if you can figure it out. Beginner Arduino tutorials on YouTube might be a good place to start.

Have you tested putting 140kg plus the weight of everything else on the traction loss frame? The side members look thin to me.

yeah, I was really looking forward to motion, but it just seems too hard for me.

Steel is solid as, no flex at all.
