2DOF Seat Shaker / VR Research

    Hi everyone,

    I'm in the earlier stages of planning for a 2DOF seat mover that I specifically intend to use for VR. I'm mostly considering the PGSaw motors, as I'm in the US and they seem to be the best price/availability for here.

    Currently, I'm planning on using the 50:1 75RPM versions of the motor with a 50mm CTC lever, which based on my design should give me about +-8 degrees (~16 degrees total travel) for both pitch and roll.

    1) is 8* max to small, too large, just right for using VR with or without motion cancellation? I have both a Rift and a WindowsMR headset.

    2) Do those motors have enough grunt in an arrangement similar to @noorbeast 's DX Compact sim with 50mm CTC? SimCalc with my current dimensions and what I believe to be sane specs for the PGSaw motors (75RPM, 25N-m) is telling me I should be sitting around 200N-m of torque for both Pitch and Roll at around 400mm/s linear speed - but I have no frame of reference to know if these are sufficient numbers.

    Overall I'm aiming for an inexpensive compact 2DOF sim that can be tucked in a corner when I'm not actively using it - hence only 2DOF, seat shaker, and the compact arrangement rather than a shoulder-mounted bar.

    The pgsaw 50:1s should work just fine.

    With motion and VR speed and precision of movement are far more important than gross movement range. I use 40 degrees up and down on 60mm CTC levers and that range is fine, as on a compact design you are moving the base so the seat back amplifies the linear speed and range of movement.

    Oh, wow, a reply from the man himself! That is good to hear - I was basing much of my design on your DX Compact, albeit so very much simpler.

    Do you think the speed from swapping 50mm CTC to 60mm CTC is worth it? If I understand correctly, the PGSaw motors are fairly similar to the Motion Dynamics motors in terms of power - just a third of the price because shipping from Australia to the US is murder.

    I use 60:1s, so without actually doing the math I expect there won't be much difference from what you plan with 50:1s @ 50mm CTC.

    I'm using the PGSaw 50:1 motors with 50mm CTC levers in a design that was based off of noorbeast's rig. I don't think you would have any issues using 60 mm levers. That being said, I'm pretty happy with the speed using 50 mm levers.

    Not yet, though I do own a rift and the rig is meant to be dedicated for VR. It's not functional at the moment as I'm replacing the monstermoto drivers with a sabertooth and fixing an issue with my universal joint. As soon as I get it back up and running I'll be trying it out in VR.
