The SteamVR compatible Samsung Odyssey goes on sale November 6 and will cost $499 with a pair of motion controllers.

The Odyssey has dual 1400×1600 AMOLED screens and a 110 FOV. This is above other Microsoft based HMD competitors, but before you get too excited keep in mind that what matters most for VR is pixel density, not traditional notions of screen size.

    Samsung HMD 1440x1600 OLED @ 3.5" = 615 PPI

    Acer/HP/Dell HMDs 1440x1440 LCD @ 2.89" = 705 PPI

That said Samsung has a great deal of experience with VR and high end screens.

The VR HMD market is certainly hotting up and it will be interesting to see actual side by side reviews and comparisons with the Rift and Vive when it gets out into the wild. It also interesting that Samsung is jumping on the SteamVR PC bandwagon, despite their preexisting partnership with Oculus with GearVR.

Norm and Jeremy from Tested just summarised pending Microsoft HMDs, including the Samsung Odyssey, and report that the latter is noticeably better screen resolution than its MS competitors and the Rift and Vive, hence in their view worth the $50 difference. They also clarified that SteamVR support will not be at launch, but at a later time.

Sumsungs offering looks good especially with that res and built in headphones/mic (a must IMO). The controller tracking sounds a bit lacking though with the limited FOV of the HMD cameras. But as I'll use it primarily for racing sims i'm going to wait until it's integrated fully with Steam later after launch and I can read a few reviews before diving in. It looks promising though and should run ok with current VR systems, not so sure the same can be said for Pimax?

I keep seeing the controller tracking being described as acceptable and "good enough" on these MR headsets. That might truly be good enough but tracking glitches can be really distracting. I know if I bump a Lighthouse stand in something room scale (might be time to just wall mount them) it yanks me right out of whatever VR experience. But headset tracking on them is also generally described as good so these may be great for sim use.

Motion cancellation is an unknown. Might be able to attach a controller(s) to a platform right in front of you where the cameras can see it and have the software just register head motion relative to them but that may or may not be easy.

I do think the Samsung and Asus versions look really good, though. I’m with @teeds on the Samsung being the one I’d go for, but I’m also going to wait. Pretty sure HTC will show their version 2 soon. They have to. LG is entering the market with Lighthouse tracking and a higher resolution headset and HTC has known about this for some time. HTC has to at least be comparable so odds are good we'll have two Lighthouse-based systems soonish that are close to the MR systems in resolution but with known good tracking. And Valve has said native motion cancellation is in their roadmap but no commitment on when. In the mean time we have a perfectly good plugin to do that.

    Time will certainly tell.

I agree @Zed, the Odyssey tracking being 'good enough' is really about what is in the visual field and it is hard to say how inside out tracking would go in something like motion cancellation, so like you I am in the wait and see bunch before deciding what HMD I will go for as a version 1.5 device upgrade, though it will likely be one that supports gen 2 Lighthouse tracking.
