Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I have been lurking for a few weeks looking at some of the different motion platform builds that you guys have been working on. I am looking to build a 2dof joyrider platform. Currently, I'm in the middle of completing the frame and everything. I settled with the idea of having two motors connected to rods that will provide the motion versus some of the other different methods I have seen here.

So, my question is what sort of parts do I need for this build? I have already ordered two JRK units. I am planning on ordering the 12v wiper motors, power supplies, and potentiometers. I need help ordering the correct ones. I'm new to this sort of thing and I don't have any sort of back ground when it comes to building or programming electronics. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, thank you for the link. I was looking at another person's build on here that I plan to copy, but I will have to wait to post a link to that thread since I am new. They built their frame out of metal which is heavier then mine and they had some concerns that the motors would be to powerful. His motors put out about 25nm and these put out 50nm. So, I am worried that these may have to much power.

The 50:1 will have less speed, more power. The 25:1 will have less power but more speed. This is all influenced by the length of the lever on the motor shaft.

I would recommend the 50:1 as you can always make a longer lever to increase speed, but a shorter lever on the 25:1 to increase torque will limit the travel. Really both will work depending on the design.

Thank you for the reply and the link! So, I think have a list of parts that I would like buy for this project.
    x2 JRK
    x2 HP Proliant DL380, 575W, DPS-600PB, 47A at 12.15V
    x2 1/4hp 12v DC motor 1:50
    x2 hall effect potentiometers

Here is the link to the thread that I have been following

    https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/2dof-joyrider-flight-race-sim-build.7498/

I'll post a new thread in another section of the forums here after I have ordered and received all the parts. For this joyrider I followed the plans exactly so everything is made of PVC. I know the dimensions will be off, but I would like to follow cgodwin's design.

Looks like few of us on the uphill climb. I'll also be firing up a build thread sometime coming up. Just a straight 2dof rig here but with shaker transducers in the corners and wind using @Avenga76's wind generator system. It's a process for sure. Takes a while to sort out what to get, get the stuff, do any modifications or customizations, etc, eh? I imagine you guys feel the same way but I can't wait!

I disagree, have you checked the FAQs as there is a whole stack of different code shared by many members: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

Thanks, I did not go though all the FAQ, I'm sure I'll find lots of useful code in there.

Hey @that_is, I keep finding more and more information here as I roam around. There is actually so much information and so much of it can really influence how you approach a build, it's probably worth it to just swear off buying or building anything until you have spent a lot of time on here just digging through everything. Had I done that I can say that not all of my choices would have stayed the same as they are now. I have been doing my own digging and looking and still have people point out new stuff to me. You'll get there. :thumbs

We have been communicating via PM, but better to discuss it here so others on the forum could benefit from the conversation.

I'm happy with how my joyrider style sim turned out for my first build. That being said, I would certainly do a few things differently if I did it again, and maybe go with a very different design.

I like the fully enclosed design mostly because it is unusual in a DIY sim. The other big advantage is safety. My frame design is essentially a giant set of scissors, so the cover helps keep you hands and feet out of some bad spots. My sliding cover isn't as elegant as I would like, and I'm not sure the added immersion from being entirely enclosed really is an advantage. The cover did limit the screen size, and the motion seems more extreme (in a sort of artificial way) with the cover removed so you can actually see the motion relative to the stationary room. With the cover on the motion seems more natural and I get less motion sickness, but for a crazy sense of motion in a more arcade sense it is better with the cover off.

The biggest downside of my fully enclosed design, and to some extent joyriders in general is how hard it is to get in and out of it. I'm pretty agile, and it is like lowering yourself into a open wheel car. But people visiting often have difficulty with it. On mine you need to go up a ladder and stand in the seat and then support your body weight on your arms while snaking down into position.

I did do a few minor modifications since I last posted pictures. I cut out part of the back panel. This is so spectators can actually see what is going on inside. The driver doesn't notice the opening behind his head. This opening also keeps the inside temperature down. I added some fans in the front to blow air across the driver and out the opening in the back. And of course I added a few homemade vinyl graphics to make it look a little cooler!

Hey, that sounds like a really good idea. I ordered the rest of the parts yesterday. The worm gear motors will take about a month to arrive, but I guess I can go ahead and start a new thread for the build. I will try to summarize all the information that you have given me in the new thread.
