Ask Ferrariman for his adapter updates/sec before buying this adapter!! I think that you will change your mind unless he has made some dramatic improvements since last we talked.

I can get about 222 outputs/sec from the Devantech adapters with optimal settings. I believe the best Ferrariman got with thise adapters is 166. I cannot say how much of a difference this will make in quality of motion and if it is worth the $ difference or not. I can say that the difference is noticable though. I used to get around 167 updates/sec before making some config changes.

This the the one that I use: http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/5889-USB-to-RS485-Connector.aspx.

I think that most any USB<-->RS485 adapter would be OK. I would suggest that you get a half-duplex adapter though, not a full-duplex adapter. Most half-duplex adapters have a three wire design, while the full-duplex have 4-5, so it's fairly easy to tell them apart.

As a community, we have not tested very many adapters yet, so it is very possible that the is something that will outperform the Devantech adapters, I just don't know what they are yet. IMHO, you would be wise to avoid Hexin, which will certainly show up in your searches and are an extremely low cost. Most of them are full-duplex anyway.
