    Welcome @Vantage9.

There are some members here with exceptional skills but most of us came to sim building just like you, having no real clue but wanting to get into motion simulation. Fortunately the members here freely share their time, advice and expertise with anyone willing to give motion simulation a go.

There is a bit to get your head around initially but it is not as complex as it first seems, there are just so many choices to make around design and parts which depend on your own goals, skills, resources and where you are in the world.

A bit of time spent planning is time well spent, and the community here can help you out as you formulate your ideas about what you want to build, which will save you time, money and frustration, so post your thoughts and kick your ideas around with the community even in the planning phase.

Have a look at existing member builds, that may help you refine your own project: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

You will find plenty to get you started in the FAQs, from design software, dimension of sims, to PSUs, pots, motors, JRKs, Arduinos and Motor Monsters and more: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

We have a glossary for all those acronyms we tend to use, which will help you decipher some descriptions: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

    Good luck with your project.

    Hello,

I rarely write anything on forums - kind of a lurker here - but after starting with doing DIY stuff I got completely sucked in, which may result in me being active user for once :)
Right now I'm in the process of buidling my first 2DOF tailored to be useful in VR - if things go good I'm going to finish it in next few days. It's basic wiper motor setup which I treat mostly as "learning material" made without any cad program etc - already found out how to improve my next build and did some mistakes [chinese MM clone for example] which will be easy to avoid in next build. After finishing current build I'm planning to start with either 4DOF or 6DOF actuator based project - depending mostly on funds and free time.

As for now I can only say thanks to everyone who shared projects here, you've been a godsent while planning how to build this thing :)!

    Hi guys.
My name is Garry from the bonny northeast of Scotland and a new member to the site. I have a real hankering to build a motion sim rig for racing titles but am a real newbie to this game and for that matter to forums and posting stuff etc.
I stumbled across this site searching for simrigs and control software and have been overwhelmed by the amount of info and assistance available.
I intend spending a few weeks checking it out then forming a plan for the build.
I look forward to taking part in the many discussions on the site and bouncing ideas off of the more experienced builders amongst you.
    Cheers.

Hello everyone, I'm new here. A newbie more. I'm from sevilla (spain) I'm making a homemade 2dof simulator that will later convert it to a 2doff + traction control. I am an electrician and a friend helps me with structure. I'm using arduino with two jumpers and two seat ibiza 2004 engines.

    Hi Guys!

My name is Heiko and I'm from Germany. I'm following this great forum for about a month now and I guess it's about time to introduce myself.

Basically I got Project Cars like 2 months ago and figured, it doesn't go well without a wheel. So I got a "Thrustmaster T300 Ferrari Alcantara Edition". Works pretty well. Since I get bored pretty quickly , I googled stuff and wound up here.

After sucking up hundreds of threads here, I now really gotta blame @SeatTime @SilentChill and @wannabeaflyer2 (and many others) for their awesome DIY project showcases resulting in me wanting to build a 6DOF using linear actuators.

I have a background as a software developer from the E&E (Elevator & Escalator) layout drawing automation industry, but nowadays I (was) shifted towards project management in that area. As a hobby I used to hack Playstation PS3's, and if you ever tried to downgrade a PS3, you might have come across my nick (flash chip projects like NORway, NANDway, SPIway, Flowrebuilder, all open source, available on github).

Those hobby mcu projects were based on a Teensy++ 2.0, an arduino style / compatible dev board, but programmed on bare metal in 'C'. My current plans are to build a 6DOF using AC servo motors (cause DC is what "everyone" did already and I need some challenges) like this: ... (cant post links yet.. it's an AC 600W / 2Nm Mige servo with drive for $275,- a piece).

I've contacted Thanos about AMC1280 details, but I don't really like the analog +-10V speed control route he goes (apart from the steep price of ~ $600,-), when servos can be controlled a lot better with pulses (I guess). So I've looked into the SMC3 code (great project, thx a lot to @RufusDufus for this) and figured, it can't be too hard to add servo control to this. Planning to use a Teensy 3.6 180 MHz Cortex-M4F. Plenty of processing power, arduino compatible and cheap ($30,-).

Long story short, there's a lot of stuff I gotta learn - mostly electronics stuff like level shifting, opto couplers, differential line drivers / RS422 (hey @speedy and all other electronic artists) and ofc mechanical stuff (well, I can weld (sort of), so I'm not a total noob).

Is a lot to digest for a beginner like me, but I'm confident, all of this can be done within maybe one year with all of your help!

    BR,
    Heiko

Thanks Craig! Ye, PS3 days are long gone, so i need some new challenges.. :p

Thanos got back to me, and he already smashed my hopes of controlling a servo with pulses... But hey, you gotta prove shit before I believe it.. :D So, I'm waiting for my servo+drive to arrive and then we'll see what can be done..

hey im andy, gaming name is minimus sometimes with other numbers in like mine on here, im a big techy fan and also a motor engineer and mechanic, i know my way round cars like the back of my hand, been a mechanic for 10 years started working on cars when i was 13, i had to retire from work all together because i suffer from a extreme heart condition and kidney failure, i am on dialysis for the rest of my life due to my heart, now less of the crappy stuff, ive been wanting to build a racing sim for a long time and now with all this extra time on my hands i can do stuff, i do have a problem with game dash and yes i brought the pro version, its making the windows error sound and the gauges arnt working almost like game dash crashes

anyway , hope to have some good time with you all in the future :)

    Welcome @minimus1899.

You will find a diverse, active and helpful community here, where members give freely of their time and expertise.

Your chronic health may stop you working but hopefully does not restrict you from building and enjoying your dream simulator.

You will find the FAQ section covers many detailed topics: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

We have a glossary for all those pesky acronyms we tend to use, which will help you decipher some descriptions: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/
