G-Seat vs 6Dof Motion platform, what feels best? with VR or without it

    Hello. Im wondering if anyone have experienced with the G-Seat or Motion platform in VR or without VR?

    Im wondering what is best for accuracy and the mest feel of motion you get, the best immersion? What is best? a G-Seat or a 6Dof Motion Platform? It is going to get used for Flight Simulators

    My budget is maximum 4500 dollars. i prefer bellow 4k dollars

    @Avenga76 uses a G-seat with his traction loss rig and @SeatTime uses a partial G-seat like approach with his 6DOF, so perhaps they can comment.

    Unfortunately I cannot give a simple which is better answer as they both bring different things to the simulation/immersion table. If you have the room and can afford to - both. VR of course, would have to drag me back screaming to a flat screen :).

    I have a G Seat and a 3DOF and they are quite different types of motion so it depends what you want and in your case, what types of planes you are flying.

    In flight sims the full motion is used more for the pitch/roll angles and the G-Seat is good for feeling G Forces.

    My 3DOF is better for slow planes because you can feel the bank and pitch angle. But if I am flying a fast jet then the G Seat is better because it feels more like the G Force you experience.

    How diffrent does Linear actuators vs push rods feels like for motion platform? is it better with linear actuator or push rod method?

    Best thing about actuators IMO is there is no slop at all its directly driven you feel everything. I think with some really good expensive gearboxes you could achieve the same

    I was wondering what motor is best for use with a linear actuator? im thinking about DIY actuator made of carbon and steel/metal with 800mm length of travel. Carbon fiber actuator like what @SeatTime did

    My budget is maxiumum 4000 but i want to try to stick bellow 3500 USD.
    Should i go the Brushless motor, DC or AC route?

    The frame of the motion platform will either be in carbon fiber or lightweight metal/alloy.

    Personally I would probably go with 24v DC motors if i were to build again, as fast RPM you could find some 3000 or above:)

    I haven't built any actuators yet so take this with a grain of salt. I would reassess that very small diameter looking yellow rod that you're using to hold the ball nut from twisting. Any flex on that rod and you loose fidelity. I know ball screws are very efficient so there won't be a huge moment from them but it looks like that rod would be able to deflect pretty easy...

    @SilentChill Okay thanks. Does it work with 4500RPM? or is that too much?

    What other considerations do i need to take care of in linear actuator? like limit switches? do they cut the power to the motor? how do they work? Do i need any potometers?


    @cfischer I was thinking about the bending effect soo i taught about maybe using steel and have the 2 steel rods to keep the bending effect to a minimum (at 0% if possible)

    Have anyone experienced with that method of using steel cyliders for anti-rotation/anti-twisting

    What material are you going to use for the 4 main rods you're using? Why not use them all as anti-rotation. At least one.

    Carbon fiber will be the 4 main rods, and there will be a big carbon fiber tube that will cover everything execpt for the motor. The 4 main rods are for structure integrity

    Good idea :) I will get back to the drawning board and see what solution i can come up with.

    Yes 4500rpm would be perfect with 5mm ballscrew ;)

    Another question: Should i increase the diameter of the ballscrew? since its soo thin? just thinking soo i dont break anything and it colapses. The weight of the whole rig will be bellow 120kg i belive

    No not if it's all put together properly, each axis supports each other they are solid once all connected up to the platform and base

    @norsk22771 G-seat you will never feel motion sickness , 6dof is very good for big plane because of slow motion but not sure for fighter !
