SMI will be showcasing its eye tracking Developer Kit for the HTC Vive at SIGGRAPH 2016 next week, building on their previous experience with such kits for GearVR and the DK2: https://www.vrfocus.com/2016/07/smi-reveals-eye-tracking-developer-kit-for-htc-vive/

There are a number of reasons as to why eye tracking has a significant role to play in VR, but the most important is significant efficiency gains via foveated rendering, where only the part of an image that the user is focusing on is displayed in full resolution, while the other parts of the images are rendered at a lower quality. This means higher quality game rendering where you look and allows for VR to run on far more modest hardware, making the cost of VR far more attractive.
