Some of you may recall I built a VR broomstick chair and 2 broomstick riding experiences for my father: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/your-other-diy-projects.8640/#post-108168

Well dad and my sister came over today to celebrate his 85th birthday. Dad loves VR and has years of experience, starting with the DK1 and then the DK2 with my motion simulator.

For his 85th birthday dad got to try out the Vive for the first time. He spent hours doing The Lab, the Secret Shop, Longbow, Kismet, Waltz of the Wizard and testing out the 2 broomstick flying experiences that I built especially for him.

All went fine until we restarted the Wizard's Tower broomstick experience so dad could walk along the gangplank style entrance, perched high above the ground, to see the animated troll up close and personal. Dad did that and then walked back the length of the gangplank, peering down into the gully far below.

I made the fatal mistake of saying how leaping off the gangplank looks far scarier than when sitting in the broomstick chair. The moment I said it dad leaped head first, as a skydiver would out of plane, into the wooden floor.

Luckily dad is not the least bit frail, he had busted the skin on his forehead, pulled the cords and cover out of the Vive, but luckily for all concerned there was no major damage to him or the Vive. We picked him up, stopped the bleeding and I soaked the blood out of the Vive foam padding.

My sister asked what was he thinking, and dad said it just seemed so real. Her immediate response was if it felt real why the hell did he think he could actually fly on a broomstick, as no sane person would leap off a tower that high. Dad just laughed and said because it is fun!

The Wizard Tower and gangplank Dad took a swan dive off are here...it is a long way down!

can't believe that your father is 85 years young - considering that he is almost over 80 years old he looks much more "alive" than me lol. Best wishes to him and hopefully he can keep enjoying all what he wants to do for many years :o:

Dad jokes that his plan is to be immortal and at this rate he is doing pretty well. He is fitter than I am.
