I’m not a lawyer either but you made some very good points @noorbeast! I did I quick search and in short “commercial use" is constituted as financially profiting from something so I was not looking at things quite right. Simtools 1.3 only states that it is, “Not Licensed for Commercial Use” so you must still be using an older version.

Ive got commercial licence on my dual hire racers. I paid for the licences on them. I run 1.2 on them and they work so I leave it.
yes 1.3 simtools shows up not commercial, and for private use, who cares! I have 1.3 on my personal ride.
Ive built 4 sims and sold them, and 2 motor/jrk/power supply boards and sold them. They were sold as is and it was up to the new owner to use whatever software they chose after that. They just happened to work with x-sim 2089 or Simtools. No warranty. All private sales and they knew it.
I told them to leave the settings as is and if you go further, dont call me when they nuke themselves.
Having even a basic design is going down the path of Simx. And its suits most for sure, and as its one device and set up accordingly, it uses Simcommander which is set for one device.
My desk racer design is based off the size of the seat, if you choose a bigger seat, widen the measurements. Piece of cake. Its an adaptable size measurement.
Having a kit would work, just allow for one size suits most. But when it comes to different motor and control board configurations, to get them to work right, you need to change the position and or layout of the motors.
Probably why shoulder mount seat mover at rear adapts best.
My desk racer will not work very well with wipers and ard and small h-bridges. It needs larger motors and more power. So there is a fault in that design depending on motor and control board choice.
You need to remember people that Simtools suits several devices and therefore needs some more user interface adjustment.
I never built the setups to be commercial, but to help a few people out.
Nothing wrong with the way the licence agreement is worded by Simtools boys.
Just do the right thing in the first place and tell them what you are up to, no hiding and you may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
Try to hide and cover it up and thats where it all goes wrong.
Ive heard and seen stories about that.

jajja i just read the whole conversation... i have dreammed about a sim bussiness but when it comes to reality... i havent even finished my sim at home :( so thinking about a commercial busines, in my circunstances is a dream that can only be achieved by the big guys in the forum... it surpriced me that big boy also thinks that is a difficult matter.

i was thinking in creating a coin operated sim, but when i do the numbers i would have to charge a little extra coins to people in order to make it a nice business that is the reason i think almost all the arcadia business in my town are closing down.

i wonder how good or bad in terms or money are commercial sellers like simexperience http://simxperience.com/ doing?

i have the impression that this guys are doing a grate job, working so hard and also having not too much sells (spend $2,391.00 usdlls in a toy is something that almos in all cases all wifes will not be so happy about, and if you are a teenager or so, i guess it is not small money to spend)...

is this a closed road? is it really a closed road?

    fer

No still here. I've been scouring the French thread for info.

It looks just right for my DIY ability. All wood, seems a basic setup that can be adapted to suit. It's got a small footprint. Looks like it could be built over a weekend.

I think it's great! all the bits you need in one box.
His videos look like its a good sim. May not be up to spec for some of the builds on here. But a great starting point.

Also, still looking at the used market as well.

Coin operated makes sense, but you would need to write a small program that returns the game to main menu, like hitting ESC button to pause it and add that to an existing game. As you may know, no current games have that. You have to manually hit the ESC button or something and then select "retire" or something.
Simx I think has other private backing. Theoretically , you would need to sell a sim a week minimum to keep you in full time work with this, allowing for wages, rent, use of equipment, so forth.
Ive had 3-4 people wanting to invest in my sim setup as a business. I told them how it works and they gawked. Building and selling sims / parts is a good idea, but expect it to be a part time income more than full time.
I still work a full time job in warehousing.
I have 2 hire machines I take to places www.facebook.com/davesmotionracers and I can tell you now , they do not rake in a fortune. Ive had people offer big money to buy them off me. I refuse as I do not have time to build more. I tell them to build their own. These people have more money than brains.
They are slowly getting known, but even after having them in "test use (friends parties) for a year, its a slow process. I expect that as few people have seen simulators even static and fewer have seen motion rides.
And the few that have seen motion ride know how expensive the current lot here in Sydney are.
Mine are priced to hire to families, not corporations. I am not interested in big company hire, I am filling a void of where this sort of entertainment doesnt exist at low cost.
If you want to get know, build a few, and run them as pay to play at markets and small car shows. Let yourself get known around your area. It may take a year or so, and you may make very little money from people wanting to play, but you will get valuable feedback from the public. And make them adjustable for a 5-6 year old to and adult of 6' tall or so to fit on.
Heres a tip if you do go down that "hire" path. Run arcady games, like Dirt Showdown, Burnout Paradise, simple arcady games are a hit. Nearly all the people whom play on mine cannot play a racing game to save their lives. They want to have fun.
The closest thing I run to a true sim game is Grid Autosport. It look impressive and is a real challenge for most people. Like a decent rally game, run Dirt2 and or 3.
I dont bother with rfactor or any really more "sim" game.
If there are sim companies and or hire people around your area, run what they will not and fit into a market they are not interested.
Ive outlay maybe $5000 in 2 sims and trailer. They are tidy and sturdy.
The next closet guy to me has 4 dbox sims and set up , over $100k.
    I charge $200 for 3 hrs for 2. ($600 for 4 if I had them)
He charges $1500 for 3 hrs for 4.
Mine suit young kids, his dont.
Use basic Driving Force GT wheel and pedals. Make them affordable and fun to use and you will get somewhere. People, once they see them will ask if you can build them some.
    Cheers. David.

    Thanks @noorbeast
Not quite what I had in mind! ;)

I'm going with the French 2Dof kit. Thats exactly what I wanted to find! A cheap kit with (almost) everything you need to dip a toe into the world of DIY sims. Will be a great learning curve.

I watched that Uni of Maine video, but they didn't do themselves any favours. I actually thought they were having a joke for the first 2 minutes of the video!

    They sure didn't.

Nor does the blurb on their Kickstarter page make reference to what they mention briefly in the video, that they intend to open source the plans and software - I would have thought that giving something back like that was their biggest selling point, and I have advised them so.

I guessing they are just after cloud funding for their uni project. Likely they will walk away from it after that. I just watched the video and I think we all know more about motion simulation then they do. They may learn something looking at this site. Eg. How to make a simulator cheaply.

My kit from SimuKit has arrived from France. Many thanks to @Wanegain for helping me out with a few extras. I am going to attempt the build next week, with any luck.
Will start a new thread in Build section! Will do what I can to document for any other potential noob builders!

    Hi @Leo Burton !

    I hope everything is working.

    I will follow your build.

If you want I have a pdf (and gdoc) of how to build my low cost rig. If you want to translate it (I have this project too), I can send it to you !

Yes please. I'd like to have the PDF, to help me out a bit.

I'm planning on adding some locking wheels to the base to make it easier to move around the room, which means I will lower the height of the universal joint by 5cms or 10cms, and I will replace the threaded rods, with shorter ones to compensate.

I think now that 25cm is a little bit higher. I built a new one at 17cm.
I also suggested the wheels in my tutorial :thumbs
