New Sim Idea

    I am curious about the double up of motors on both ends of the chain and for each opposing roller directly connected to a motor either side of the chain, but which I presume drive in the same direction. Could that not be simplified by driving through slots in the frame and using a cog at the other end, which would reduce the number of motors by half, or am I missing something obvious in what is such an interesting and unique approach.

    does the sphere have to give you full rotary movement?

    You could add enough panels to have 360 x 360 x 360 movement, but you'd need a laptop inside and some way to connect wirelessly to the motors outside. Doable, yes. Recommended....?

    What would the motors do inside the sphere?

    @SeatTime would be the best person to answer specifically, but in general do keep in mind that the whole point of simulation is to 'fool the brain' rather than recreate a particular force. Hence the better question, which @SeatTime may want to elaborate on, is how effective is his compact solution in simulating heave. From the comments @SeatTime has already made he is satisfied enough with the current rig to drop plans for a full 6DOF sim.

    My reason for bringing it to your attention is that it is a compact solution and could be incorporated inside as part of your seat design. It is also not dependent on the rest of the movement system, so could perhaps be an addon, as you had intended. Food for thought at least regarding how heave may be considered. One challenge is how you intend providing power for anything inside the sphere, for computer/motor or whatever.     My seat heave module has about 50mm of travel - up/down, but this is mainly due to the requirement to move my whole body weight and also still be responsive. Works great on car sims and even DCS. I have also found with VR you don't need allot of movement to trick the mind, as it can feel like you are moving even when motion is not enabled. Real synchronised motion just adds to the immersion.

    My approach is to design not around me, someone of average height and weight but with regard to people who will be heavier than me. So I could use maybe one motor, but someone bigger would want either a more powerful motor or two motors. I also considered having one axis as one chain, whereas now it's two chains. If this seems stupid then consider that if all the base arms are identical than I only have to make one set of parts. Plus, now it's easy to have 6 omnichain arms, or 8.

    A lot of people make their sims as complete custom one-off devices, if you're considering designing something that you hope to sell thousands of you should reuse your own custom parts and design around already available parts as much as possible... hence, 4 identical arms.

    It seems to me that there is value in a simplest possible universal design for all base arms, both with respect to manufacture costs, reducing the number of parts and potential breakage problems, with different motor power options offered to suit individuals to suit different weight groups. Though that may well be my ignorant curiosity missing other benefits associated with such a novel approach.

    How will the integrity of the interface between the inside of the sphere, the user, to the outside, the electronics be done in a reliable way?The sphere seems to have a lot of freedom to "roam" around in its base.

    Anyway I really like the design, I can see myself sitting in it.... :)

    I would argue... it's nothing like the Feel Three. Not modular, you can't fit inside it, limited movement, linear motors, no heave..... I could go on... it just uses a hemi-sphere, and a small one at that.

    @traveltrousers what would be the purpose of going on or argue about this? This forum is not about what is new or better than some other community members ideas or builds. It is a collective group of enthusiasts that share their amount of knowledge (vast or minute) to build a simulator and enjoying themselves while doing it.

    I think it is an interesting concept, with possible potential and from what I could see on their site with heave. The you tube, you have attached, is also a respectable design with a different solution for motion actuators, humans :grin.
