    Hello everybody,

After having acquired a lot of experience during my first project, concerning the construction of a 6 dof simulator, I decided to relaunch myself in a new project.

The link to the thread of my first project for information : https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/6-dof-odrive-bldc-new-design.14580/

The purpose is now, to build a 4 dof simulator based on an aluminum Prosimu frame (To be confirmed).

The originality will be the linear actuators.... I name them: SMR 200 :)

I want to develop a new actuator based on an open SFX but fully different into it….

Indeed, it will be a real pull/push actuator motorized by a custom Servo - brushless DC motor and high quality components...

To finish the best : I’m going to use an ODESC as a controller & driver to pilot the motor. ;)
    And AMT 102V for encoder

I will share more details during the evolution of the project. :thumbs

Looking forward to seeing this come together. How do you anticipate the final cost will compare to the SFX actuators?

    Hi,

It's a good question that i wanted to answer since a long time. To answer your question, i make a table to compare only, the motor set between odrive solution and AMC solution... I don't want to discuss about this subject.... The conclusion is enough clear on the table i think.... Thanks :)

Thanks. I'm excited to see this project as it progresses. I'm building a DD wheel with an ODESC (have all the parts, just need the time to start working on it), and I was planning on a BLDC/ODESC motion rig next.

Can't wait to see what you come up with :)

Not yet, but once I get the actual build started, I'll be sure to post progress here.

You forgot to mention that the AASD servos are available from small sizes and power (flange 60mm 400watt) to huge power and flange size (flange 130mm 5KW)...

And don't forget the safeties included in these industrial servos, STALL protection, Over Torque protection, Overspeed protection, Automatic detection of faulty encoders or cabling, lower currents running through cabling compared to DC solutions... in short, everything to not worry if something catches fire!

    Hi thanos,

As i said, on another thread, this table is an answer of peope who asked me the difference price between the two solution. So i make a comparison with the price criteria only.... As i said, the amc solution is easiest than odrive solution. I don't want to discuss about who is the best..... Both solutions deserve to exist ;-)
Another thing, you know that it's not adviced to build a rig with a 60ST ac motor because , torque is too low.....That's why , 100 % people use 90 ST or 80 ST motor....
In odrive firmware that i use, there's also several security about speed, current , torque etc.....

I repeat, there's no competition.....Both solutions deserve to exist....People make their choice ;-)

Sure. But another item not included in the cost math in that table, the high quality shielded wiring for the servomotor power and encoders that is included in the servo drive and servomotors kits.

In DIY BLDC, you could spend lots of money and time having to gather the really thick AWG wiring, manufacture your own cables, add shielding, and also build the shielded wiring for the encoder.

It's very easy for someone without experience in making such wiring, to make mistakes that can cause problems, happened to me even with experience in the matter. I try to use systems where you don't need to make any wiring or cables, and use what is available off the shelve, already build!

Again, pointing out what really matters, not competing, and that users should educate for themselves before take on something because its a few $ cheaper. Almost every time there's a catch.

i have the same odesc board but i cant configure the board because i have minimal experience about this board...

odrive based board not as easy as vesc based....
and its not intuitive at all because it doesnt have UI like vesc, but it still have very big potential if someone can build using odrive based board...

    Hi,

VESC is used to control motor speed. With ODESC or Odrive, we use it in control position mode. There's several tutorial on youtube that show you, how to set it easily...

Odrive have official GUI and others non official GUI. I invite you to make some search on odrive forum community ;-)

    Good work :thumbs

    Hello,

    Work is progressing....

The actuator is fully designed ....
Stroke is : 200 mm (+ 20 mm security stroke)

The actuator uses a custom sevo brushless motor with integrated fan :)
The actuator can be used in real push/pull mode with u-joint on each side if needed.
If needed for fun , the actuator can work without motor cover ( but it's not secured to do that :) )

It's time to print the different parts in PETG ....

Some technical solution is inspired by lebois racing.... (Thanks to him) It avoided me less work :thumbs

    Hi,
There' s some news about the development of the actuator. I made some improvements as you can see on photos.... The fan is now a separate module that you can add in option. Power cable and encoder cable is now securised by a cover... To finish, i added a plate to secure the access of the coupling.
It gives a nice actuator :) Evo 1.jpg Evo 3.jpg

About the ODESC, i made a test bench to develop and set correctly the board.... The final will be a good surprise !!! It's for soon :thumbs 20230524_123051.jpg
