For members who may not have seen this video, it looks pretty cool. A touch expensive at this time though.

Expensive to buy, plus an annual subscription fee, but an indicator of what may yet filter down to consumers, though to be realistic that really needs a good haptic glove type solution, as real cockpit models are too expensive to be practical across multiple simulation scenarios.

I would be happy to use this technology with my current HOTAS/keyboard etc, then trying to commit all the buttons position/functions to memory like now with VR.

I can appreciate that, but it does sort of defeat the purpose of what is suggested, a 1:1 mapping in mixed reality.

Brilliant video, thanks for sharing @SeatTime
Have to agree though, far too expensive but it does highlight what the future may bring.

I will stick with my PointCTRL finger lasers for now.

Been talking about this for years. Nice to see it done so well. Most of the next wave of VR headsets should have decent color stereo pass through to be able to do this easier and cheaper at home, at least better than this. Seeing mixed reality back in 2014 done with the DK1, never thought it would take this long. Being able to switch the cockpit layout with a flip of the switch is what excites me for home use. You can also check out Reality Blender on Steam to do similar now. Sadly he took a break form development because no one seemed interested in it. It's the next level of immersion. Ovrdrop also has a chroma key option in the beta version now, so you could do similar with it if you wanted to play around with it.

Edit: Forgot to show a test of Reality Blender from 2 years ago before the index had stereo corrected pass through.

As soon as I saw this I thought of the car video with the guy drinking a Coke while he was driving and just how good these guys seem to have tuned this up. This looks really nice. But the platform appears to restrict you to those jets since they seem to have mapped those cockpit outlines. If all I flew was one of those jets it would be a no-brainer. For a dedicated jet sim this is truly amazing!

At least for the kind of simming I do, straight VR seems to work better, though. I guess if money and space was no object, having an accurate physical cockpit for each aircraft would be about as good as it gets.

It is very cool and I hope they do well. Those cockpits they sell look very nice.

I think those PointCTRL finger lasers are amazing and close the loop between us in the physical world and the virtual world of the sim while letting us have multiple very different cockpits.

Do they work in FS2020 now?

Not yet, MilesD told me yesterday that he is still working on it but there are many issues with FS2020 that hinder the use in that title. He designed PointCTRL before 2020 came out and at the time was only focusing on DCS.

Thanks for the updates, Historiker! I’ll keep an eye peeled! I tried to get a set before but don’t use the DCS website. But not flying DCS much now they aren’t as necessary if not yet working in FS2020.

    Cheers!

With an external camera mounted on the front of the HMD w/ a chromakeyed feed routed through OBS and back into the headset, I could see this done today. This is effectively waht they are doing here.

I do not know how it would affect FPS in the actual game. I would need help understanding that. I've been looking into this concept quite a bit over the last month, and anyone with helpful feedback would be appreciated.

Positioning a camera feed into your live VR view is easily supported already, but I have zero experience with chromakey or equivalent to combine the images.

The only current option I know to do this is using Reality Blender from steam. Also ovrdrop has some chroma key functionality you might be able to get lined up with some work.

The Lynx R-1 headset should be perfect to show off this type of mixed reality with its stereo color pass through cameras already matched to the view in the headset. I hope chroma key compositing cropped areas is supported in the Lynx OS or the PCVR streaming app of the Lynx R-1.

The technology is awesome! But it involves a single cockpit ... Which ultimately makes the use quite "restrictive".
