Bug SimTools .NET Framework Unhandled Exception

    Hey all, I have been happily and comfortably using SimTools for several months now with no issues at all. Today I decided to download the Xplane11 plugin and give it a try.

    I ran the SimTools PluginUpdater, it updated successfully.
    Then I opened Game Manager and got a .NET Framework error. "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." aaaaannnd it was broken.

    • Windows Features > Enable all NET Framework (no solution)
    • Reinstalling NET 4 (no solution - "Your operating system is already running this)
    I'm running out of ideas here.

    I ran out of potential fixes, and resorted to a full factory reset of my virtual machine (I'm playing on Shadow.tech), and now that I've reinstalled everything, SimTools won't let me activate because my "activation key has been used too many times" . It never ends.

    But if we install the xplane plugin and a problem happens, we could try to remove it.
    I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but if we goto "C:\Users\(your user folder)\AppData\Local\SimTools\GamePlugins" we can simply delete the game dll and then restart simtools to see if we are up and running again.

    Just shot an email over a few mins ago--I appreciate it big time bro. Trying the entire process from scratch again with a fresh start, and hoping I can get it working properly.

    I tried this--the issue was a .NET Framework exception, and even after deleting all dll files, I could not get SimTools to launch at all without throwing the exception. It was also the only program affected, so I thought a complete uninstall and deletion of all files would fix it, but on reinstall the same problem occurred.

    I have a brand new installation and the moment I add the first additional new game beyond the default "Live for Speed" I get the same error messages. Sim Tools is installed the default directory it suggests which is a fairly short path. Clearing out the new game DLL from the app folder in the user profile and just having "Live for Speed" fixes it.

    I tried different games, each with the same result. Using Simtools 0.2.6 .. basic W11 box. Feel free to DM me (we are in the same timezone).

    Let me try something out quickly. I think I have a hunch of what is going and it is purely on how you make content available and how the messaging around it is written that is confusing.

    "Please note that SimTools 2 plugins will only work with SimTools 2 and SimTools 3 plugins will only work with SimTools 3."

    Gimme a hour or two and I'll get back to you with some thoughts / recommendations if my suspicions are right.


    EDIT: Quickly bought the gold contributor package to check and verify and my suspicions are right. The above reported error messages are related to people installing the 3.0 sim tools game packages which are freely available from Downloads & Links – SimTools. The plug-ins you can download for free from Plugin Library (simtools.us) are 3.0 links but that isn't clearly indicated anywhere on the page. 2.0 plug-ins are downloaded from here but they require you to get either coins or a contributor package. It for sure confused me and I actually am directly involved in writing tech content so let alone we are dealing with people who aren't well versed in this.

    Before this forum gets a ton more of these posts my recommendations are:

    Change the language on Downloads & Links – SimTools and make it very clear on the distinction that you need to go to a different page for downloading plug-ins for 2.0. Probably should link to that.

    Change language on the top banner on the same page to specifically say 3.0 plugins instead of plugins

    On Plugin Library (simtools.us) specifically call out that these plug-ins are for the 3.0 version and again link to the 2.0 repository for those plugins. (it would be nice if the software would detect you try to install a 3.0 plugin on a 2.0 software but I understand that might not be easy).
