So I have been using my 8KX for a few days now with the following notes:
Please note that my thoughts on this are purely personal with how the system relates to me:

The Good: - Great clarity, and less lens distortion from 5K+ certainly the best that I have seen in VR, although for me it is still not as good as it could be due to my low IPD (60mm).
Not So Good: - Sound not that good and they only sent the thin foam face interface which is just too big for my head with uneven pressure points (the whole thing wobbled on my head ) - see image below were it sat on my head with terrible light bleed from the sides. I had to swap it out for my Vive/VR cover setup which was much much better as it wraps around my head - pressure more even + better sound.

the above setup is working quite fine for me. Will comment more later when I get the time to try it on more applications

Thanks for posting SeatTime. Fortunately I too have a Vive DAS on hand if I need to swap it on.

As for the sound, I expected it to be terrible so that's no problem. I have no intention of ever using those built in speakers! For the sim I'm actually considering active noise cancelling over-ear headphones to see if I can get good sound and also block most of the noise from sim movement. =)

I'm not going to order any until my sim is built though, so I can return them if they don't perform well with it. Something like this: though I'd be willing to spend up to around $200 to get some that work and sound really well.

Maybe lets wait for the full 8KX to be released, before we write them off, also they are the only HMD with a wide FOV at this time.

Update: From later feedback on the OpenMR site it seems that the reason why I could not fit the headset properly to my head was due to Pimax changing from plastic hinges to metal hinges which were not built the same and did not allow a suitable range of movement (more detail on the OpenMR site if you are interested.

I wish Pimax all the best, unfortunately I think they aimed a touch too high for their available expertise and therefore struggled with never ending issues and delivered too late with many other good VR options now available.

I don't think so, It was a great idea to go to a metal hinge, unfortunately it was manufactured incorrectly.

Yes, I believe that Pimax themselves admitted that the metal hinge design was a mistake because it was rushed out last minute.

I myself will add "rushed out last minute while thousands of people were screaming as loud as possible about how long it was taking to get their HMD's."

Pimax has issues, but I'm convinced that they are truly trying their damnedest to correct and overcome them. This isn't a cash grab, this is a small company trying to innovate and push the available consumer tech harder and faster than any of the bigger, better funded companies.

That's the thing though, they have no real competition for high fov and can actually take a bit more time and deliver a proper product, In the end people will have more respect for that. People that want high fov also only have one real choice so i doubt they loose a whole lot. Some new sales sure but their price point also plays a big role. They also have a fairly big range on offer with the Artisan, p5k+, 8k+, and now the 8kX so they should have gained enough experience by now to know how things are.

The latest is in my opinion poorly tested and rushed while being overpriced. Id have to shell out 19660$ (No deluxe strap) for just the HMD/8kX and i cant buy it off their site to save 50 or so on that. That's just far to much even without the issues. Am i glad they are pushing and innovating sure, but sorry Pimax, this just isn't good enough. If it was 1450-1500 after tax and about 200 more than the 8k+ id consider it but there's just no way at 19660. I suppose they want to get rid of some 8k+ stock and overprice like we see others do in the HW industry

Thankfully im very happy with my 5k+ and can wait
