Yeah, Its stable, works right out of the box and I like the industrial VFD drives with servo motors since they are bulletproof and powerful. I made some calculations and DC is not even that much cheaper when you consider the power supplies.

ah yes, so busy I forgot to keep you all in the loop, sorry for that!

    • We finished the frame with adjustable footrest "ferrary style".
    • Made a control box to contain the VFD drives and thanos. (for those who are paying attention: VFD drives will be mounted with the cooling fins up so picture is wrong)
    • Made a button box for park, on/offline and emergency switch
    • Put the whole thing on a checkered flag floor
    • Finished screen mounts and control interfaces
Sending it out now to the powercoat factory, in a couple of weeks it should be finished!

    Hi,
This is a great build. Planning on something similar.
Are you able to share drawings for your actuators?

Finally all the stuff back from the powdercoat company, doing some subassemblies first and will hopefully have it all working this weekend!

    Hi,

I have a question on one detail of the conception of your linear actuator. I can observe that you don't use slide rode to fix the piston rotation due to the fact that you use u-joint at the bottom and the top of the actuator. So, the piston can rotate if needed . However, i don't understand why the lower part of the piston next to the nut is not guided ? Is there no risk of vibration at high speed ? Wouldn't the guide also improve the positioning of the piston?

Indeed I dont need to lock against rotation: the u-joints lock the position. Ans since no switches or string pots are used the position doesnt matter/

When using linear bearings the play is minimal. The piston (rod) is thick walled hardened steel. Not much movement there. There is no noticeable vibration.

Furthermore, when the rod is extended, that bearing wouldnt be in contact anymore anyway.

"Furthermore, when the rod is extended, that bearing wouldnt be in contact anymore anyway."

    What do you mean ?

Usually, the piston is guide on two points :
1-At the upper part of the actuator (Linear bearing or self-lubricated ring )
2-The lower part of the piston ( Not exist for you ) --> and that's what caught my curiosity... :)
But saw your video, it seems to work very well, with this particular conception :thumbs

i'm not sure what you mean. Can you post a sketch of how its should be according to you?

Look at photos attached. The piston is guided only at one place. Usually the piston is guided in two places at the same time unlike the fact that rotation is fixed by the two u-joint but not you. Can you explain me your decision to choose to not guide the piston at this place please ? Are you sure that there won't be problem when the rig will be loading ?

Ah I see what you mean. I'm using a long linear ball guiding on a hardened axle with very little play. Works perfectly: no sideways movement and/or vibration is present.
