Looking to get some help on a either 2dof or 3dof motion rig. Can someone explain the difference for a 2dof with traction loss vs a 3dof rig. I will be trying to make the build as cheap as possible and will be using a vr headset. Rig will be used for racing (AC) and flight (Elite Dangerous). Currently just looking for some guidance right now as I am new to motion rigs. Is there any discord servers for motion sims? I have been looking but I can't seem to find one. Would be great as I have a bunch of questions but don't want to flood the forum.

EDIT 1: What would be better for a beginner: Aruduino or JRK?

You will find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs to get you started, including sections on JRKs and Arduinos so you can compare, in particular check out the design section: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

You can go through existing member projects for specific ideas or inspiration: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

Or search for specific types of projects using the Google Custom Search function on the Recent page: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/find-new/posts?recent=1

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

A 3DOF can simulate 3 axis of movement (pitch, roll and heave), while a 2DOF + traction loss simulates 2DOF (pitch and roll) + a specific force (TL).

    Good luck with your project.

What would be my cheapest option possible? Also would 3dof or 2dof + TL be better for Elite Dangerous?

Your cheapest option would be a 2DOF. TL is not really relevant for ED, it comes into its own with racing games where you have the rear end sliding out.

How much more immersive would a 2DOF with TL be versus without it?

It depends on the focus of your game play, if the majority of your time is with flight and space sims then traction loss does not really add anything, but if you focus on racing then TL comes into its own.

Other forces, such as heave, are more generic and can play a role in both flight and race sims, say in a 3DOF.

You can go all the way up to a 6DOF + G-Seat and G-Pressure systems, how much it adds is relative to the cost and complexity and what your focus is when it comes to simulation. Do plenty of research and keep in mind that all home based simulators have their own pros, cons and limitations.
