    Just wondering how much power draw will these dc motors draw at stall? If I had a 1000w motor with a 12v 80a PSU, will the motor be drawing that much on a regular basis or will it only use a fraction of that 99% of the time?

    While I'd like to use a powerful dd wheel but if its going to draw an average of more than 500w then I may go with a chain or belt drive to get the higher torque needed. Also I've seen some gearbox motors, how good are these, or can you not use the due to needing to put an encoder on the final drive?

    I've just been doing research in to more powerful motors and will be phoning up a local scrap yard to see if they have anything.

    I've found motors that were made for forklift/dump trucks and am wondering how good these will be?

    What do you guys think of these? Have I missed anything really important?
    I messaged him and he did say that the motor can go counter clockwise if you reverse the wires, whether this is true or not i'm not too sure. But forklifts and dump trucks do need to go both ways so its probable true.

    The first thing that stands out to me is the Amperage which is 195 A @12 Volts and 165 A @ 24 Volts, I'm no electrician but that's massive. I'm not too sure how that would go when running it off house mains so I'd look into this first.

    Yeah that's what I was thinking as well, but as we're using it in stall mode, wasn't sure if I could bring it down to 80a or so and still keep the torque up.

    Just besides, there are some other such like motors, and the rotation direction are given differently. Can be CW, and other both CW,CCW. The forklifter may have a gear on reverse and the motor to be set to spin only in CW. Like many electro cars do, and there controllers give only one safe way of rotation. All thouse flyback diodes there etc. So may be, better take a note on it too. But this should be just an ordinary dc motor at the same time, and it should have to spin both ways, with no extra thingies. And also. You should think about it's possible big inertia. Even though will find how to power that. Generally hard to say how they can behave, and do you need to go so deep for ffb wheel with all of this.

    But, feel as though you will forget about this motors) Better take a deeper look for the DC servo motors or alike.

    Good point guys.

    Just having a look at what kind of different motors are out there that could possibly be good for our project. Just seeing if there's any readily available motors that could possibly be better than the my1020. We'll see if anyone finds anything.

    What's the most you're willing to spend on the motor? I'm happy to look around for you but I need a limit or I'll go to town haha.

    Probably the maximum I can go for is probably around £150, can go slightly higher if something amazing is found.

    That's the problem unfortunately, brushless and servo motors don't work properly currently as they need a different and far more expensive driver to run them, at which point your building a OSW.

    The only motors that will work are DC brushed motors.

    Ben, you can take and see how this motors will be. At least, you can give less amperage to it, say up till 80 - 100amps, and it can be fine, as it can then cope with heat much better as other motors. That should be enough for them.
