Question Any mechanical engineer types able to help?

    Hello folks. I've got a quick question I'm hoping someone here can give me a definitive answer on.

    I used 3/16 steel angle for a braket. The load is on bolts through the angle bracket and is diagonal to it, with just a bit more force being applied along the length of the angle than perpendicular to it.

    To my surprise 3/16 steel angle was inadequate, and under full load it is flexing quite a bit.

    I'm going to weld a second piece of angle to the original brackets to strengthen it. Which way do you think I should do this under these circumstances, option 1 or 2? My brain thinks option 1 is the way to go but thought I should ask.

    Unfortunately I can not extend the reinforcement to the mounting points, only the 25" length of angle that spans the space between the two actuators. Thought I should mention that in case it matters.

    I apologize for any incorrect use of terminology, I'm sure I'm driving some of you crazy with that. =P It's been 22 years since my high school physics class and I'm trying to make this quick since I intend to weld these tonight before bed or in the morning when I get up.

    Thank you, that's what I thought too. Unfortunately I discovered that removing the bolts was going to be a nightmare so I left them in place and boxed them in. I think it will be fine, but if I still see flexing I will cut off the bolts and knock them out, then drill through holes for long bolts like option 1.

    I got the steel cut, welded, ground flat where needed, and painted since that last post! It was another setback/delay, but another one that I was able to promptly resolve just like the last two! Fairly satisfying but damn. I think tomorrow night I will finally get the limit switches mounted and then I can start working on the software side... which I expected to do tonight, last night, and night before last. =/
