JRK Heatsink Options

    I apologise if this sort of thread has already been covered but i couldn't find anything.

    On running my simulator for the first time I noticed that my JRKs run extremely hot despite having 50mm fans running 2" away from the top of the JRK main chips.

    I have very basic heatsinks currently on my boards but I really think I need to upgrade them to ones that perform better. I don't believe they are transferring enough heat away from the chips. I'm interested to hear everyone else's thoughts as to what the best shape or style of heatsink is for allowing heat to escape from these boards. I have a few options on the image below. I'm also interested to hear thoughts on the best options for attaching the heatsinks are.

    Hi Barry. I am using heat sinks similar to the golden one in your picture above. The ones I have might even be a bit smaller in terms of height. They came with a thermal transfer sticky tape on them and I have not used any other form of thermal transfer tape or paste.
    The JRK's in my setup are both mounted right next to each other and I have one 120mm fan directly above them. Around 20-30mm above the JRK's.
    There are no heat issues at all that I have noticed.
    Having said all that, any of the heat sinks above should be adequate as long as they have a good thermal transfer connection to the chip and your fan can take that heat away.
    If they get too hot, adjusting your jrk config settings might help too.

    @Barry - if you are having or anticipate issues with JRK cooling, the boards are designed to actually dump heat out the bottom of the board most efficiently.

    I can’t do the searches right now but I’ve posted a bit about them and have a heat sink mount I worked up that keeps my JRKs cool with no heat sink on the top of the chip.

    You can get by with heat sinks on the top but there is more thermal resistance. If you check the H bridge chip data sheet, they discuss proper thermal control in depth.

    As long as the heat sink covers the majority of the chip, the main factors are going to be the amount of surface area on the heatsink and also the amount of aluminum in the heat sink.

    The more aluminum in the heat sink, the more space there is for the heat to transfer into. The more surface area on the heat sink, the more area to transfer the heat into the air.

    I done a fairly major heatsink upgrade from what i had. It's made a huge difference. I also have 3 x 50mm fans running from one of the power supplies. It seems to be holding up pretty well. IMG_0692.JPG IMG_0694.JPG
