I can't find how I can edit my last post (maybe I'm not able to?), wanted to label @RufusDufus, just in case! Still working on this, seeing how can I source all the parts needed, inching closer with some details!

hi all...i interest in building DD with cheap part...
straigh to the point, can we just build DD with close loop stepper motor + close loop stepper driver (2hss86h driver)...
can we build that into DD wheel..??
    sorry for bad english...

I'm not an expert in the topic, just been following most of the builds related to DD wheels.
What I understand about stepper motors in general is that almost every commercially available controller including the hss86h controls steps at a pre-programmed torque level.
A direct drive wheel needs a torque controller where the FFB from the game is a dynamically changing torque applied to the motor.
A normal stepper motor controller's torque can be somewhat controlled via serial port, but the smoothness and latency is far from ideal and it requires a separate serial port connection apart from the motor output which slows the whole thing down.

As a summary, there is a good reason for everyone eagerly waiting for the @RufusDufus (TM) torque controller. :)

Yes i dont think a stepper motor is best suited to a ffb wheel

can't we just reprogram the hss86h for required setting via serial port just like argon driver..??
i think hss86h look like argon driver clone...i dont know that's true or not, but i think that will work the same way (maybe)...

Well i built mine using @RufusDufus control board with these stepper motors been running it for about 9 months now.
Base on the fact that it blows all the low end and mid priced consumer wheels that Ive used right out the water then i have to disagree its fast strong and give great ffb.
I Love mine and gets used a few hours every day.

Have a look at this project, I think it is what you are trying to do... https://www.xsimulator.net/community/threads/mmos-controller-with-cheap-servo-drive-and-motor.10319/

I would expect the torque resolution is pretty limitted with an off the shelf stepper driver though as they are not really designed for that purpose.

@RufusDufus , do you still make batches when there' s enough demand ??

@RufusDufus ,only just found this thread but am really excited by it and really hoping you are going to release more boards.
definetly put me down for one if you are.
    cheers and excellent work

@Gadget999 i think a stepper motor is fine, if you check out this review it looks like a nema 34 stepper motor that accuforce use in their wheel

The problem is a stepper motor is designed to rotate in small steps - the design of it means the output will always be in small steps

It will feel different to a dc or servo motor

It will work but will feel different

too bad the we can not get the controller board. nice to see that it is working fine but since we can't buy one, this project is more or less worthless...

Somehow i smelled it and bought an OSW at the beginning of this year. That was the best decision in over 10 years of simracing.

Yes, that's what I will do soon. But I found a way, for a semi-cheap stepper motor OSW: The older ionicube is able to drive a stepper motor. So all we would need is an ionicube x1 wide, ioni pro, simple motion v2, stm32, psu and a cheap nema 34 (12,5nm) with encoder from aliexpress. 100+200+20+20+50+100 = about 500€. Which is cheaper than a csw 2.5. And you would have the possibility to upgrade to a servo motor later. I think that should work.

But I think the best solution would be, if RufusDufus would share the details of his project (as it is usually done here) so that everyone can make his own SSW by him/herself at home. Instead of making it top secret and on the other hand not selling/making the controller.

Unfortunately, it has been shown from past projects that there are lots of unscrupulous people out there. What happened to the 'Wind simulation Kit' and even 'Simtools' comes to mind as just two examples, so it is not always that simple. It's not easy sitting back and watching someone else making money off your work....

Sure, I fully understand that. But it seems like he does not want our money. If he would release the details, he would at least get a lot of honor as the inventor of the SSW. That's better than nothing.

Or he should just release how to build the controller and sell the software/firmware.

I don't see how @RufusDufus is under any obligation to do any such thing.

If you would like to research, create, release or sell a similar thing then go right ahead, but please do not try and impose some sort of obligation on others when there is none. It is totally up to @RufusDufus to decide what he does or does not want to make available as a commercial kit.

I did never say it's his obligation. He can do what ever he want. I just said the project is useless. What's the whole thread for? Letting the world know, that it can be done for cheap with great results? But no one can use it? Great! hug:Pointless DIY-project...
