    Hi everyone!

I registered a couple of months ago but haven't been active here unfortunately. Hope this changes by 180 degrees as I would like to build my first 2DOF for playing in VR and hope to do it in the near future. Just have to dive into the threads here and have a good read! I don't have the proper knowledge base but am eager to find it here:)
    Thanks in advance!

ps-Please mind my english as I'm not a native english speaking person and will from time to time be unsure of the terms and phrases used to describe the tech stuff here

Hi guys! I'm from Chile and a colleague from work and I decided to give the motion sim a try, driven by his passion for rally racing and mine for electronics and video games. We're total noobs, but as things are going, I think I'll be in charge of the moving seat system.

We're going for an Oculus-based sim because it seems a more immersive and we have a chance to get our hands on a DK2 in June and maybe get ourselves a Logitech G27 (the one with the gear stick). After reading through the forum now I have more questions than answers, but this is pretty exciting!

I wonder if you guys can point me in the right direction. Our goal is to have a relatively portable system that we can take to car shows and other geeky activities, something that doesn't break the immersion experience, it should be easy to replicate and cost-effective. These last 2 conditions are tradeable if the experience improves significantly by making it more complex or investing more. The idea is to make it a memorable experience and hopefully make it easy for us to guide other people that may be interested in building their own. This type of simulators are rare to non-existent here.

I already wrapped my mind around the idea that this is not going to be a short, cheap or easy task, so I'm not expecting a kit or someone to do our homework, but I would really appreciate your feedback about these questions:
    1. Should I go for a seat shaker design or we can go straight ahead and do a 3 (or more) DOF? Which is best to make you feel like driving? I have absolutely no experience with any, so your thoughts are gold. Also not scared about building more complex systems.
    2. Should I build a prototype? As I stated before, all I have is this Arduino board and I don't really know which components I should get for a prototype, except for a few small servos, and I don't know which type either.
    3. For a full-scale system, what should I look for in a motor? We're considering a system that can be easily plugged in a house, so I guess low power and high RPM should be priority. Do you have any recommendations?
    4. Which games and software should I get for the simulator? I mean, which would be the best game for a rally sim, what's the software to be used to communicate with the motion sim and if there are only a few specific games that work with it.
Thanks in advance and I hope you guys can help me out. I'm really looking forward into this.

And thanks in the name of all noobs for making this an awesome community!

    Welcome @misterk.

I will look forward to details of your planned 3DOF.

SimTools 2 is fast, light on resources and pretty flexible when it comes to configuration, plus it supports a large array of games, I think you will be impressed.

Hi, joined yesterday, after reading various threads. Would like to move on to motion simulation eventually, so lots of research needed. Started on the cockpit path back in 2007, making a home built cockpit from pvc swimming pool tubing (easy to cut and glue), and wood panels for mounting seat, wheel and pedals. Played GTR2 in our home cinema, with 2 metre projector screen and surround sound. However, cockpit had to be moved out of the way for film viewing, and gradually had less and less use. Forward to last year, and a move to a new house. Now had space to leave the cockpit out permanently, using a large tv screen, dedicated for the cockpit. So now easy to drive at any time. So discovered all the latest games, and the great improvements made since 2007.
But having re-found the racing sim bug, started looking at cockpits again, and things that were only a dream in 2007 are now a reality. So, made some modifications to the original cockpit, but began to realise its limitations. So started looking at current commercially available cockpits. Eventually found someone selling a used RSeat RS1 for about half price, even though it looked as new. So snapped that up. Now have a great looking cockpit, rather than an obviously home-built affair! Have added a transducer for vibration to back of the seat, but only using overall game sounds at the moment. Looked at Simvibe, but a bit expensive, in my opinion. Especially as there is no evaluation period available. So, interested in GameVibe, when it becomes available. And in the meantime will read more about motion simulation for the future.
The forum looks to be a great resource, with people sharing lots of ideas. Hope to contribute something myself eventually.

    Welcome @trecital.

Game Vibe is still a WIP that we are all looking forward to. In the meantime you may want to get a taste of transducer control using DriveVibe with Assetto Corsa, as it is free: http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/drivevibe-body-shaker.8850/

Others are also hacking massage style seat cushions to kook into Game Dash: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...at-fans-and-vibration.7684/page-4#post-127195

So have a good look through existing member projects for inspiration, there are some fascinating projects and tons of ingenuity.

Hey all, New member although I have been browsing a long time.

I'm interested in getting into a 2DOF first and then maybe adding TL later. Still haven't decided whether to go front mount motors or shoulder mount.

As I am currently an engineering student I'm really interested in a lot of the design work that goes into these great machines, and I see it as a way of putting some theory to the test. I have already started sketching some frame designs as well as some h-shifter designs but unfortunately as a uni student and father of 2, money and time is tight so I will take a while to get started but I still really enjoy reading everyone's projects for now.

    Welcome @JamieMac.

There is plenty here to draw on for inspiration.

Spending some time planning and hunting down bargains in between family and uni will get you there in the end.

You may find the SimCalc an interesting way to explore design options: https://www.xsimulator.net/communit...e-linear-speed-and-forces-of-your-design.270/

First of all what a fantastic forum this is! So many fantastic projects!
I started off small with a GT Omega cockpit with a T300 wheels and pedals, then the mod bug hit and the project started to grow.

    Now I'm at this... lol
OSW Wheel, Heusinkveld pedals , Triples/Rift, custom DIY shifter and handbrake, plus a bunch of shakers, and a couple wheels....

Now the time has come to add motion. From all the reading in this form, I'm leaning toward a compact seat mover. (motors at front of seat).
Already started ordering some parts. I will be using the 50:1 Ebay (pgsaw) motors with JRKs.

Looking forward to finally starting a build log.

    Quick question
Is it possible to install SimTools on two different computers with the same license key? I wanted to install it on my laptop to tinker with(as I'm building stuff in the garage) , and then on the main comp for final setup?

    Peter

Section 2 of the SimTools EULA specifies licensed installs being restricted to 1 computer, or a dual computer controlled setup. But there is no reason you can't use SimTools in demo mode on another computer, it comes with a fully operational plugin for Live For Speed specifically for the purpose of testing.

    Hi all,
i´ve been registered on this site for almost 2 month now, have posted here and there, but did not introduce me properly.
I´m 47 years old, live in Germany and have been into sim-racing for almost 15 years. Finally upgraded to a full standalone rig last fall and the next logical step for me is motion. I want to build a 2dof shoulder mount wiper driven system.
I think i have the diy skills to do so and the info needed for this project is packed nicely into this site and with a bit help of the members here, the project should come to a happy end.
