I also think that coming from the DK2, CV1 was just not that quantum leap that it should have been. My son went  and so did my wife and a few friends who had tried the DK2 before, it should have knocked their socks off but it turned out to be just a DK3:(. I know it sounds like allot of hate towards VR, but I'm just so frustrated in how wrong these companies have got it - and the BS hype from 'Testers' before actual users got hold of a product. In this world you often don't get too many second/third chances in releasing a product. If VR dies, or if future changes make it unsuitable for motion, I would likely go to a 180 degree 3D projector screen - they look pretty good and have no tracking issues :).

VR won't die, there are too many opportunities and diverse fields.

But personally I think it will be some years before things like eye tracking and rendering make VR cost effective for general consumption. Once that critical mass is reached content will be a lot more ubiquitous.

I considered the Rift a DK2 upgrade because it launched without Touch, while the Vive took the opposite track and launched room scale, which was genuinely new. Things like haptics, wireless and tracking pucks will hold my interest until gen 2, but that is because VR drives my interest in motion, not the other way around.

I don't agree, but that's fine. To me IS a huge step forward from DK2 and it's pointless that I here make a list of why it is, there are hundreds of posts about it.
If you want to see a huge step forward as "can't say if it's real or not" you have to wait for another generation of hardware to support it (CPU/GPU/HMD Display..) and it won't be for everybody's pockets.

Ive yet to try vive but they have one setupin pc world for a demo so might go try it out.
If you seen what i put i the dirt vr issues i have just solved it looks awesome now ive fixed it.
Everything even ground on ultra running the asw at 45fps if i switch it off i get dips into 75 from 90 fps.
I even have debug at 2.0 aswell.
Now i bet vive will not be even close to mine now without mega mega pc.
That asw is amazing if you get it to run right n smooth.
    My pc is
    Asus m5a97 r1 motherboard.
    Fx8350 amd 4.4 oc proc
    8gb ram 1600mhz
    Gtx1080 fe
    Ssd 60gb
    4tb hd
Othere than the gpu its nothing special i can not even get half the drivers for the motherboard either.
But to run ultra everything and debug 2.0 i think thats impressive from oculus tbh.
    Smooth as butter aswell.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm not saying some people are not satisfied, but similar to the election of President Trump, a noisy few content VR enthusiast, does not equate to the thoughts of the quiet majority, or enthusiasts who can take off the rose coloured glasses.

Maybe the quiet majority isn't a majority, otherwise there wouldn't be Trump as President

It's a good point you make @SeatTime - Having never even tried Samsung Phone VR, when I slipped on the CV1 it totally blew my mind and I was hooked from that moment on. I can quite easily see how if you were already used to VR it would not be such a huge leap forward and the marketing for the devices was handled poorly. They are still seen as a niche product and sadly people who review these products on YouTube are generally paid (via the hardware) for their advice.

For me, coupled with Touch now, the RIFT is a different beast. I spend more time in Touch enabled titles than anything else, and with such deep immersion if someone comes into my room and starts talking to me I completely sh1t myself.

(Akin to walking down the street and then suddenly hearing a loud voice in your head - such is the immersion!)

SteamVR has its own ATW but uses Oculus ATS/ASW for anything build against the Oculus SDK, though I don't believe that would apply for Revive when used to play Oculus games: https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/0/305510202679681031/

vr is all about the hardware behind it and its all down to power in your comp to get full use out of a headset.
the improvements are great from dk1 to 2 then to cv1 as the better they get i would say its harder to get a bigger difference.
but now add the best power your comps can give and each vr heaset will be diffrent same as with a screen but now its alot harder.
the difference to me is having something that can give you full selction in the game then run at debug 3.0 that is a mega improvement ok yes it can be done on the dk2 but it will be better on the cv1 the advance ments tho so far have been good considering its the same head set the optization is getting there and now with a chance to really push your graphics up with asw at the sake of fps.
i still think the cv1 was a good upgrade tbh as it hit every area of the head set from puytting it on to sound to better picture.
i didnt like the lenses at first with the god rays.
from memory i don't think i would go back to the dk2 from cv1 so yes that has made it a good upgrade.
the part that held up oculus was the way was dealt with sales and then the lack of touch so was always going to lose out to vive.
price help tho but most are serious gamers at the start of addoption so money is nothing they care about it was the need, well for me it was i don't need touch as its for my sim rig so thats what i mean.
lets hope this drives forward and the hardware gets implemented better as that will be the bottleneck in vr always will be unless they bring magic out in the likes of asw but at 90fps.
all good from me thgo love the god dam thing.

I have both the CV1 and the Vive.
I race with the Rift exclusively.... a few weeks ago I hooked up the Vive to see how it looked for racing as people said it had a slightly bigger FOV and brightness, so I wanted to compare.... Immediately I noticed flickering when I turn my head and AC did not run nearly as smooth. I assume it is a configuration issue, but going from CV1 to Vive was a big letdown in performance.

A friend of mine upgraded his oculus to CV1 and donated his DK2 me. I'm blown away and to be honest I didn't see a huge difference between the two.

After some time you'll notice main difference which is comfort. At first barely anyone takes it into account but after initial 'shock' wears off you'll start to notice thickness of the cable, clunkyness of DK2, worse weight balance and smaller tracking volume. Also don't forget about headphones. Even though DK2 is still perfectly usable in sim gaming and is one of few things which leave you with "woops, it's already night - I've been playing for 6h straight..." state :)

BIG price drop on oculus rift so no competition now cv1 is best as it still comes with touch for £598 alot cheaper the vive.
Thats money towards a better graphics card.
So you get better performace aswell by upgrading computer bits memory ect....

Oculus Rift is an incredible experience. The immersion is amazing! The tracking works almost flawlessly as well. Oculus CV1 is "cheap" at the moment. I wish it was this price when I bought it
    Waiting for rFactor2! :)

I understand why price is important to many, and the Vive is $100 off today and tomorrow for its one year anniversary, but I really think for cockpit sims it comes down to what features are more important to each person. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses and I don't think anyone can really say either one is perfect.

I have my own preference but I have my own list of things important to me. I think anyone still making a choice would do well to try both before buying if they can. The plus side is pretty much either way people go, they can't go too far wrong.

Either way, driving in VR is a trip!

Have both, use both. Touch is better, rift ergonomics are better, lighthouse is WAY better than constellation.... really, there is not much in them. If you're only racing then the rift is a good choice, if you're playing more VR games (and have room) a Vive is a better choice.

Either way I'm just happy there is some serious competition going on :)

Hi, I want to share my experience, first I had DK2 VR ( my introduction to VR in 2015 ), which I upgraded by mounting Samsung Galaxy 3 Note protection screen - which really improves the SDE - last year I finally migrated to a Oculus CV1. but also had tested an HTC Vive - in my opinion - CV1 was better, because has better screen [ = less SDE than Vive ].
    - the biggest improvement in quality can be achieved by SuperSampling [ but need to render in higher resolution which consumes more resources... is worth it ! ].
My 1080 Nvidia and I6700K are being melted each time I play DCS, or Project Cars ! ;) and still sometimes drops to 30 FPS :( so,
    - in such cases good to use Nvidia Asynchronus Timewarp + Spaceworp -> during play please try changing mode using keyboard shortcut: CTRL + 1, CTRL + 2 up to 4 - [ on numeric pad ] and choose the best option for you.
I am still waiting for a 4K solution - and there was some first 4K attemps in VR on the market [ actually Chinese ], it was called PIMAX 4K: http://en.pimaxvr.com
but had many issues: LCD instead of OLED, HDMI instead of DisplayPort output - which actually cannot utilise full 4K resolution in VR, and no positional tracking = disqualification, maybe their 8K called solution will have better potential, but price... ]
