Finished - compact 3 DOF with traction loss

    It started out as a 2 DOF sim that could sit in front of my desk and then it grew a heave axis followed by traction loss. Each addition has made a huge difference to the feel of the sim and I am would not want a sim without any of the axes.

    I have added a homemade shifter, button box and a hand brake along the way too. I need to thank everyone on the forum for sharing their ideas and designs. Nothing on my rig is an original idea, everything has been shamelessly copied with maybe the odd tweak.

    My next investment will be a rift, after that who knows.

    Maybe a stupid question, but i can't identify what the second motor in the back is doing?! Is it there for heave?

    If so, it depends on the gear box. The default one with 25:1 (which seems to be used here) may not suited to lift an entire rig, but the 50:1 or 60:1 probably are.
    And the motors used in the other thread in which you asked the same question an hour ago are definitely strong enough. :)

    Cependant une chose me choque dans la réalisation. De par la complexité de la cinématique d'un système bielle-manivelle, la symétrie des mouvements à droite et à gauche de l'axe de roulis du simulateur n'est pas assuré. Pour ce faire il faut respecter des règles que j'ai évoqué dans ce sujet :

    However one thing shocks me in realization. Due to the complexity of the kinematics of a rod-crank system, the symmetry of the movements to the right and to the left of the roll axis of the simulator is not assured. To do this, you must respect the rules that I have mentioned in this subject.

    The motor in the middle is for heave , the one on the right is for traction loss.

    All the motors are from Motion Dynamics and are 200W with 25:1 gearboxes. The heave is assisted with a spring from a chair tilt mechanism, it runs a bit hot when the weather is hot so I have fitted a cooling fan. It doesn't seem to struggle with the heave, maybe that's because I am a light weight.

    I haven't read your post yet, will have a look. I have not experienced problems with symmetry, the rig is very solid and responds well to all movements.

    The elbow is connected to an office chair tilt mechanism so the spring helps support it. I tried to upload a video of it working but it is a .MOV file and I can't upload it. Any idea how I get around that?

    Hi @Robdog. What about the noise of the motors ? I have a pair of Wiper motor and them are too noisy.

    @Stealthelius : if the motors are driven by PWM below 20 kHz, they are noisy

    what driver are you using? motomonster can be tweaked to ultrasonic PWM

    The motors are not noisy at all, the only noise I have is a rattle from the rod ends when the rods move.
