Im looking to get some new tie rod ends. Mine have bolt in but I want the hole through so I can use a bolt, I believe this would help get rid of some of my slop.

Any suggestions on sizing here? Im thinking like a 5/8th hole for the bolt and the rod.

5/8th would be fine, mine are 10mm and many use 1/2 inch.

The type of joint you are looking for is called a rose joint. you can pick them up from ebay at around $13 depending on location. I'm using 12mm or as in the states would be 1/2 inch.

I'm using "heims" - 1/2" hole, about 8.50 US each..........I also used brass "cones" on each side of bearing for protection and higher degree of movement - both on eBay, new........and they work
superb............you can get ALL different sizes of heims and cones.............up to an inch in diameter hole. The heims come in both male / female design.

@shannonb1 a race supply store here in the states is a great source too - i.e. summitracing.com or jegs.com. Even the cheapest they offer is more than adequate for what we are using them for IMO and they have about any size/type you can imagine.

Lol @ Shannon, Little anxious to post eh.

This is the style that Made a bunch of noise after only a month or so.

I personally feel the style i have now will last indefinately, its a Full BALL Vs only 2/3 of a ball, therefor more surface area. Mine have a grease boot and are fully greased which will only aid in preventing wear/slop. and the fact mine have FAR more anlge in the joint itself to play with, So i could get rid of the little shims i had to step the rod ends away from the Lever's and seat frame.

I went with those in the link below...and stuck with my others that are off of a cub cadet mower. I solved my slop by widening the stand on my motors. There is zero wiggle now. New 50:1 gear boxes helped as well but unlike others I can move them by hand but they are stiff and doubt my wife could for reference.

The ones below are 20 thread by inch. Had to go to fastenal to get the right threaded rod. Noticed right away that 20 vs 13 thread, 20 has a lot more stiffness in the rod.

The downside about these rod ends is that that dont contain a grease bearing. I can imagine this might squeak over time and need to be lubed directly. The other thing is that the angle of which they allow movement seems very limited. I would need to adjust the pitch of my arms closer in to use them. If I decide to add a 3dof for sway I think these would work just fine. I cant say I would recommend them at this point.

Here are the rod ends that I use. I prefer them becuase they have a longer arm and can extend out from your gear box without the need for any kind of shim. Because they extend out more they also allow for that steeper pitch that helps with my stability.

I'm wondering if the tie rod ends I got will be strong enough? They are 3/8"-24. Guess I'll find out when it's built.

    Rocket man,
In all probability, the 3/8" heims will be strong enough..............the culprit comes in - the "length" of your rods/shafts between the two heims............too long and you may get some flex which will not be
    good...........and hopefully, they will.
