Preparation is really the key with MDF but difficult to get a good paint finish on the MDF now owing to paint manufacturers having to remove the lead content to please the idiots in Brussels. Some companies can now powder coat MDF but this will probably be expensive. The best finish I've seen on a Hyperstim was having been sprayed by an auto body spray shop using a two-part paint. Another idea worth investigation would be to 'wrap' it in vinyl,as they do with cars and the fancy graphics on vans.

Trick I have found with MDF is that you need to seal it with a wood dope then you have a nice surface that you can paint with anything, a good mat under coat works well too as the MDF absorbs it like a sponge.

Nice cockpit! It is not a problem painting MDF if you want to go that way though. Go to your paint store and ask for a bonding primer. I prefer an oil-based product due to its leveling abilities but with new technologies today there are good water based bonding primers out there too. Actually, I suggest just one coat of a standard oil based primer, as it is usually sufficient to do the job. But, with MDF, you will need to apply several coats of primer to all the edges if you want it to look good when finished because its porous edges are hard to seal. Give it a good sanding with 220-grit sandpaper between coats and try not to sand thru the primer on the corners on the last sanding. Then you can paint it with just about anything other than a lacquer product. If you did want to spray lacquer on it, then I suggest using water based bonding primer first or the finishes recommended priming product for MDF.

ps I don't know much about wrapping. Can it be made to look good around the corners of your MDF?
