Something very different - a snowboard simulator

    Hi everyone,

Apologies if this is not appropriate for this forum, but it is a motion simulator - just not racing or flight based!

A friend of mine came to check out my sim chair, he loved it of course, and he asked about creating something for snowboarding.

We considered removing the chair and just strapping a snowboard onto the existing motion platform, this would be kind of fun, but not realistic at all, and no help in learning or practicing.

We moved onto the idea of a 'travelator' system, like a running machine but covered in fake snow matting that dry ski slopes use. Our local slope uses a matting called Perma-Snow which is flexible and would probably deform OK around a roller system. http://perma-snow.co.uk/

In fact, near us there is a travelator style ski slope, but it's big 7.5 x 5 metres: http://www.skiplex.co.uk/indoor-ski-slopes/how-it-works.aspx

Our idea is to reduce this to a personal size, and to try and include the ability to practice tricks, such as rails, boxes and jumps. No idea how jumps could work, but rails, we think are possible.

Time for a badly drawn picture!

The rider can stand on the top and prepare, then drop into the moving slope and will stay 'still' as gravity sends them down but the moving slope sends them back up.

The rider would possibly have a hand control to adjust the speed of the slope, this will help them stay 'still' and adjust their position if needed, it could also be used to send them back to the top by increasing the speed and hopping onto the bottom.

The rider can jump onto the box rail, and gravity sends them down. They land their trick and hop back on at the bottom, which spits them back to the static top.

As usual with my crazy ideas - feel free to criticize or join in this madness :D

Not a crazy idea... check out: http://www.virtualsnowla.com/ including the link to their youtube channel.

Their setup can be seen in action at about the 2 min mark in this video:

Maybe you could improve with extra motion to change slope or add bump effects. :grin

    Thanks for the input everyone.

@RufusDufus - wow, thanks for the link! Almost exactly like we imagined. I quite like the bar at the front and the harness for keeping you central, but I don't think falling would be much fun...must be an operator with a kill switch somewhere.

I'm not sure how certain this project is to be built, but there has been discussion of a decent budget, and seeing that video really helps visualise the idea and shows it's actually quite good :)
